Social media platforms have the potential to alter civic engagement and influence democratic processes. While they have been perceived as an equalizing force for disenfranchised individuals without a voice, the influence of social networks on democracy is complex. On one hand, they have the power to mobilize political participation and provide a platform for diverse voices. On the other hand, social media can be a breeding ground for fake news, propaganda, and the spread of fragmented ideas, leading to the empowerment of disruptive voices and ideologies.

A study conducted across 19 advanced economies found that a median of 57% of respondents believed that social media has been a good thing for democracy in their country. However, the same study also highlighted that social media has led to manipulation and division within societies, indicating a mixed perception of its impact on democracy.

The Complex Effects of Social Media on Democracy

The influence of social media on democracy is multifaceted. While it has the potential to promote political participation and information consumption, it can also contribute to increasing populism, polarization, and decreasing political trust. They can weaken strong liberal-democratic regimes, spark revolutions in some states, and support the rise of populist candidates or anti-democratic measures in others. While a significant number of respondents in advanced economies view social media as mostly good for democracy, the United States stands as a major outlier, with a higher percentage of citizens believing that social media has had a negative impact on democracy.
